Ruby Roman grapes
Kyoho grapes, which were first produced in Japan, are characterized by their large size. Ruby Roman grapes are about twice as big; it is one of the varieties in Japan with the biggest berries. A new variety of grape, it was developed by Ishikawa Prefecture over a period of 14 years. It is juicy, and delicately sweet with little acidity. Shipped only after meeting stringent standards, Ruby Roman is marketed as a high-end variety. In 2016, one bunch was bought for a record bid price of 1.1 million yen at an auction. The white powdery substance on the grape is secreted by the grape itself, and is proof of freshness and good quality. It is safe to eat, so there is no need to rinse it off.
